  • New Indicator Detects Food Toxins

    May 28, 2000

    By Janelle Mallett, Body1 staff

Color Toxin Alert, a Toronto business, has devised a new way to warn consumers about bad fish. The company created a plastic wrap coated with antibodies for Salmonella, Campylobacteria, Escherichia coli, and Listeria. Colored indicators attached to the antibodies will display a warning signal, such as the letter X, when the plastic covers food contaminated with those bacterium.

Researchers warn that the consumers may have trouble seeing the warning sign but acknowledge that the wrap could help consumers detect dangerous levels of bacteria linked to disease outbreaks.

The new technology can be used to detect other food contaminants, including pesticides and proteins characteristic of genetically modified foods.
